Marienella Phillips (WT 2012) in the West End
Tuesday, 2 May 2023
Congratulations to Marienella Phillips (WT 2012) on having secured the role of Tuptim in the award winning West End production of The King and I.

It is now touring and Karen Pickles (former Head of Drama and Hallward's Housemistress) with Jeremy went to see the production in Cardiff. As fortune would have it (as so often happens in showbusiness) the lead had to withdraw and Marienella stepped up to perform the principal lead (the role of the school teacher, Anna) .

Needless to say she was magnificent. Followers of Clifton Drama may recall Marienella playing the lead (Eva Peron) in the school's performance of Evita in the Redgrave Theatre under Katren's direction in 2011. After Clifton, Marienella studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Early the next day she travelled to Twickenham to lead the singing of the National Anthem at the Woman's England v France grand slam clincher before a record crowd of 58498, before returning to Cardiff to continue in the lead role - busy girl.
