Nick Tarsh [1934 2021]

It is with immense sadness that I write to let you know that Derek Nicholson Tarsh died earlier this week. Nick joined Polack’s in 1947, following in the footsteps of his uncle and brother. He captained the XV, was Cadet Captain and became the first Polackian to be appointed Head of School. He took a 1st in Law at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was also a rugby Blue. He subsequently played for Lancashire, and was called to the Bar in 1956. His career was spent predominantly in the tourism industry, where he was best known as the founder of Insight International. He was committed to a number of charities, most notably Relate, of which he became Chairman. He was awarded an OBE in 2006 for his charitable activities. He was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Polack’s House Educational Trust, of which he became Chairman. PHET saved Polack’s from closure in the early 1990s and, when the doors did finally shut in 2005, the Trust ensured that the vibrant Jewish community at Clifton has continued to flourish ever since. Nick served on Council, including as Vice Chairman and President, from 1995 – 2011. He is survived by his widow, Helen, four children and numerous grandchildren. His wisdom, kindness and generosity of spirit will be sorely missed by all who knew him. |
